This is Mary, the anchor of our Namuwongo co-op. Namuwongo the area of Kampala that is home to the largest slum in the country. Many of the people here moved as refugees from the conflict with the LRA and Joseph Kony in the north many years ago. They stay for many reasons: they no longer have land in their home villages; the educational opportunities are greater for their children in Kampala; they don’t have the money to relocate. Mary has lived and worked in Namuwongo for over ten years, stuck after her husband abandoned her, living in a small one-room home with her five children. She loves to sew, though, and even has a machine at her house, which she puts outside when she works.
Agnes is our other rock on the team. She used to sew, then tried a few other endeavors like having a product stand. She loves to be busy, and there wasn’t enough sewing for her to do – until now! She is so excited to have the chance for a regular income and work, and to produce items for Americans in her native fabrics.
